It is important for your safety, the safety of others and the safety of property that you read this page in it's entirety and also watch the video. Don't be intimidated, sky lanterns are simple to use once you read/watch the directions and adhere to them. In an effort to save paper (trees) we have put the directions for the sky lanterns on the internet, please feel free to print this page if you need to do so.
Precautions:
First of all, never try to use EZ Light or standard sky lanterns when it is windy, it is unsafe. You should not use them if the wind is over 5 MPH. Second, only use EZ Light or standard sky lanterns in large open areas that are NOT; heavily populated areas, in areas with a lot of trees or brush, in areas that have burn/fire bans, near air ports, near large buildings/antennas/power lines, in citys or when it is above 75 degree's Fahrenheit (the colder it is the better). Third, do not use sky lanterns near airports, ever. USE COMMON SENSE OR SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES!
EZ LIGHT AND STANDARD SKY LANTERNS REQUIRE 2 PEOPLE TO LIGHT AND RELEASE
Directions:
First, start by opening the package for the EZ Light or standard sky lantern. The package has a flap that has an adhesive strip on it, ONLY OPEN THE PACKAGE BY COMPLETELY PULLING THIS STIP OFF. If you open the package another way the adhesive strip on the package will stick to the paper of the sky lantern and when you try to peel it off it will tear the paper.
Then gently unfold the sky lantern.
Now, look at the wire ears in the center of the bottom of the sky lantern.
Squeeze the ears togeather a little so they fit through the hole in the EZ Light fuel or the standard wax fuel tab (standard wax fuel tab shown).
Then, bend the ears to the inside of the sky lantern.
Put the ears through the hole in the EZ Light fuel or the standard wax fuel tab.
Then, bend the ears in opposite directions so the EZ Light fuel or standard wax fuel tab is secured in place.
The EZ Light or standard wax fuel tab should be resting on the criss-crossed wire, this view is looking at the bottom of the sky lantern, the wax fuel tab is resting on the criss-crossed wires and the wire ears are bent over securing the fuel tab in place. Again this view is as if the sky lantern was above your head and you were looking up, the ears are bent and the fuel tab is secured, the ears SHOULD NOT BE FACING THE GROUND.
Then, gently "fluff" the sky lantern open to expand it and get air inside - like "opening" a garbage bag, just gentler.If your sky lantern splits when doing this, or you see a hole at the top of the sky lantern DISCARD IT - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE IT!! Nothing that comes from China is 100% and occasionally this will happen, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR IT.
This paragraph applies only to EZ LIGHT FUEL: One person should hold the tip of the sky lantern with one hand and the side of the sky lantern with the other hand, the other person should light the 4 corners of the EZ Light fuel with a standard cigarett lighter - be sure all 4 corners are lit. While doing this, make sure that the sky lantern is as full of as much air as possible - like you see in the video below, basically do what you see in the video, except DO NOT USE A BLOWTORCH TO LIGHT THE FUEL: IT WILL RUIN THE FUEL AND MAKE THE LANTERN UNSAFE TO USE
This paragraph applies only to STANDARD WAX FUEL TAB: We HIGHLY suggest that you use a Bernzomatic Trigger-Start Torch head (using either yellow bottle or blue bottle fuel) to light the fuel tab and add extra hot air to the sky lantern, these are available at Home Depot and other similar stores. This helps light the fuel tab much more easily and completely (as opposed to lighting the fuel tab with a standard lighter), it will take a lot longer for the sky lantern to fill up with enough hot air to take off if you use a standard lighter to light the fuel tab. Also, after you light the fuel tab, you can use the torch to add more hot air to the sky lantern.
You will start to feel the sky lantern become lighter and lighter pulling up with more and more force, release the sky lantern when you can feel that it is rapidly trying to lift itself.
The ideal temperature to use sky lanterns is ~50 degrees Fahrenheit. Generally speaking the lower the temperature is the higher the sky lantern will fly. The higher the temperature/humidity the lower the sky lantern will fly, do not use sky lanterns if it's over 75 degrees Fahrenheit and 75% humidity or more the sky lantern will only go a few hundred feet up. which is not safe, so you should not light them when conditions are like that. Our sky lanterns have about a 4 to 8 minute burn time.
